Counselling for International Residents in Lyon | William Smith

Living in a city as dynamic as Lyon can feel like a constant balancing act. The pressure to perform in a high-stakes career, navigate a new culture, and build a meaningful personal life can leave you feeling stretched and disconnected.

I’m William Smith, an online counsellor for English speakers living abroad. I offer a quiet, consistent space to make sense of the pressures of life in a competitive, international city.

As an accredited member of the BACP, our work is guided by UK professional standards. I practise in France psychopraticien (I am not registered as a psychothérapeute or psychologue) and I provide therapy in line high ethical and professional standards.

How I approach our work

Life in Lyon is often fast-paced. Whether you’re here for work in Part-Dieu, for your studies, or with your family, it can be hard to find a moment to pause and take stock. My approach is to create that moment.

We can look at the expectations you face—from your career, your family, or even from yourself. Together, we can explore what’s happening beneath the surface and think about what you truly need, away from the noise and the pressure to keep moving.

What our sessions might involve

We meet weekly for 50-minute sessions via a secure video call. This means you can attend from your home in Croix-Rousse, an office in Confluence, or even when travelling for work, providing a point of stability in a busy schedule.

Many people use this time to talk about perfectionism, feelings of not being good enough, or the challenges of bilingual parenting. There is no set agenda; the time is yours to bring whatever feels most important.

What people often notice How we might approach it
A persistent feeling of pressure to succeed. We can gently look at where this pressure comes from and what 'success' means to you.
Difficulty making deep connections. We can talk about patterns in relationships and building community at your own pace.
A sense of being 'in-between' cultures or identities. We can explore what it means to belong when your life spans more than one place.

Working together online

Having a dedicated time each week to speak with someone outside your immediate circle can be a huge relief. It’s a space where you don’t have to manage anyone else’s expectations.

Suitability and alternatives

Online therapy is a good fit for many people, but it requires a private space and a stable internet connection. It is not suitable for individuals in immediate crisis.

If you are in acute distress or feel at risk, please contact your médecin traitant (GP), go to your nearest A&E (urgences), or call the emergency services on 112.

Frequently asked questions

Can therapy fit around my frequent business trips?

Yes. We agree on a regular weekly time for your 50-minute session. Because it’s online, you can attend from anywhere with a private, confidential internet connection, providing consistency even when you travel.

Do you work with couples?

My practice is focused on individual therapy. However, themes from your relationships are often a central part of our conversations. If you are specifically seeking couples counselling, I can suggest how to find a suitable practitioner.
